Judy Rosati began her career in photography as an art and photography instructor in the Visual Arts Magnet Program at DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, Ky.
After retiring in 1999, Rosati had a wet darkroom installed in her home. A few years later she established her current business, Judy Rosati’s Fine Arts Photography LLC. Her work consists solely of hand-colored black and white photographs of her travels around the world.
The featured photograph is of Bratislava, Slovakia. “It was taken while I was walking along the city streets,” said Rosati. “I felt so free, as this used to be communist country until the early 1990s. I used Ilford HP5 black and white film. I particularly liked the angles at which I could photograph and the shadows of the buildings and the Coca Cola umbrella on the sidewalk café.”
After the film is processed, Rosati prints in the wet darkroom, experimenting with various polycontrast filters and exposure times. She processes the prints in the chemical developer, stop bath and fixer and then washes them. After drying the prints, she uses Marshall photo oils, Prisma pencils and photo pens for detail.
Most photographers today use digital cameras and technology, whereas Rosati’s medium reflects the fine art method of painting photographs before the invention of color film.
