The Rehabilitation Services Department staff consists of licensed, trained professionals dedicated to the rehabilitative care of our residents.
Our staff, with two licensed physical therapists, one licensed occupational
therapist, one licensed speech pathologist and five rehabilitation technicians,
has a total of more than 75 years patient care experience.
Physical, occupational and speech therapy are vital links in the health care
chain at the Kentucky Veterans Center. Physical therapy treatment has two primary
goals: to restore optimal independence and to relieve pain. Through evaluation
and individualized treatment programs, physical therapists work with patients
to achieve these goals as well as the patients personal rehabilitation goals.
One patient may strive to learn to walk with a prosthesis after an amputation,
while another may work toward independence in self-care after a stroke or to
reduce the disability and pain of arthritis.
With the aid of physical therapy intervention the pain and disability of many
diagnoses, including strokes, heart attacks, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's
disease, fractures, burns, wounds, head and spinal cord injuries,
sprains/strains, amputations, arthritis and many others, can be reduced.
Physical therapists are "hands-on" specialists, trained to guide
residents in regaining function and restoring a quality lifestyle.
Occupational therapy is designed to maximize function, increase independence,
prevent further disability and maintain health. Occupational therapy provides
services to assist residents in developing and maintaining their capacity for
productive living. Occupational therapy involves our residents in improving and
maintaining day-to-day activities such as dressing skills, meal preparation,
hand writing, learning skills and and self-care abilities. Their goal is to
assist residents in returning to their highest possible level of physical and
social function. Residents with a wide variety of diagnoses and disabilities
can benefit from occupational therapy services.
Speech therapy services provided by THVC include both individual and group
treatment sessions. Individual therapy is offered to residents who have
experienced recent problems with communication or swallowing. Programs are
designed to meet their individual needs. We also offer several treatment groups
for residents who have more longterm communication difficulties. Speech therapy
seeks to improve the quality of life for THVC residents through programs
tailored to meet individual communication and swallowing needs.
At
the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center we are very proud of our
Rehabilitation Services Department.
The treatment area is located on the first floor of the facility, adjacent to
the enclosed courtyard, with views of the grounds, seasonal flowerbeds and
outdoor sitting areas through a wall of windows.
Our department projects a warm friendly environment for our residents. The
department is equipped with the latest rehabilitation equipment. Strengthening
and conditioning equipment includes treadmills, stair climbers, ergometers and
a paragym. Pain relieving modalities available include ultrasound, TENS,
electrical stimulation, paraffin bath and moist heat. Equipment for wound care
includes extremity whirlpools and a Hubbard Tank. Exercise equipment is placed
within the department to best utilize the views afforded by the windows.
A complete kitchen is located within the department. The kitchen is utilized
for cooking groups, to aid residents in practice meal preparation, leisure
activities and the ability to provide for themselves if their progress allows
them to leave the facility.
The rehabilitation department is decorated for seasonal events such as
Christmas, Easter, etc. Residents are encouraged to participate in the
decoration of the area.
Rehabilitation
provided by our department consists of many different types of programs.
Programs are carefully tailored to our residents to insure the most effective
results.
Rehabilitation programs are individualized according to the needs of each participant. We provide two levels of programs: skilled physical, occupational and speech therapy treatment programs for patients with acute rehabilitation needs and routine exercise programs to assist residents in maintaining the highest level of independence possible.
