The Kentucky Justice & Public Safety Cabinet

Recognized as national leaders in their respective fields, the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Division staff assists Kentucky coroners in all aspects of death investigations by determining the cause and manner of death and identification of the deceased.  The 13 forensic specialists, including 11 pathologists who perform autopsies, annually conduct nearly 2,500 autopsies at offices located in Louisville, Frankfort, Madisonville and Ft. Thomas.  Also, 250 examinations of living individuals, 90 percent of whom were children and may have sustained physical injury, were conducted to assist law enforcement or social services entities in investigations.   The Toxicology Laboratory, also a part of the ME Division, conducts all post mortem tests.
