About NREPC's World Wide Web Server System

Last Updated 10/22/95
One day we hope to have a Web Server that will be supported by the Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet.

One of our priorities in organizing this resource is to make accessing the information we provide useful. Consequently, the size and complexity of our Web pages should be kept to a minimum. Where a page or file is large enough to be a concern we will note its size in the text.

Hardware

Main Server

Currently we are using the Digital Unix Web Server at the Kentucky Department of Information Systems. We have an account on the system that allows us to ship files to the server via FTP from our offices.

Ideally we would have our own UNIX platform configured to run the CGI scripts, search utilities and serve the main documents for the cabinet. Until that happens we must rely on the DIS server on Cold Harbor Road or a server provided by UK under contract. The Main server would communicate with a series of Document Servers

Document Servers

These servers can be Intel/Windows systems with 1 GB of disk space and 32 Mb of RAM. placed at various buildings. This will facilitate frequent updates by the information providers and web developers. Webmasters in the Tower can build their indexes and menus by frequently polling these document servers for content. Protocols can be established calling for the administrator of each document server to develop a text index and transfer it to the main server for indexing and menu development. This process can be automated.
