Lakes Near Glennallan, Alaska

Titus Linebaugh taking a water sample from a hole drilled in the ice at Tolsona Lake.

On April 9th and 10th, 1996 the Glennallen Jr. High 8th grade class went to Tolsona and Moose Lakes, to do water quality testing. Some tests were done in the field and others were collected and taken back to test in the lab. The tests done in the field were pH, DO (disolved oxygen), nitrates and temperature. The tests done in the lab were fecal coliform, BOD (Biological Oxygen Damand), PO4 (total phosphates), and TDS (total dissolved solids).

Tolsona Lake

The first day was nice, everybody was warm and dry. There was no wind or clouds. It was sunny and warm. The first thing we did when we arrived at the lake was drill a hole in the ice with an ice auger. Then we started doing our tests as soon as we got water from the hole. The students said that the water smelled.

The walks from station to station on Tolsona were not long so people did not get tired from walking.

Some of the quotes from Tolsona were:

Moose Lake

We had to start out on Tolsona Lake and walk to Moose Lake. It was a long walk. It was a nice and warm day again. There were no clouds and no wind.

At Moose Lake Station one we started the first drilling about 30 meters from the shore but we didn't get any water. The second try we got mud. The third try we got water. The water was dirty and smelled like rotten eggs. Everybody thought it was gross. They went from Moose Lake Station one to Moose Lake Station three. At Moose Lake Station three everyone was tired, but still alive. Mike was trying to ice fish, he didn't catch anything but weeds. Everyone was sitting around doing tests. At Moose Lake Station four everyone was tired because they walked all the way to the middle of the lake about a quarter of a mile. The walk to Moose Lake Station four was cold and long. Everyone kept sinking through the snow. We were surrounded by snow all around the lake, the sky was clear and the weather was exceptionally warm. From the middle of the lake you could see the mountains.

With Mr. Szarzi shouting instructions the class moved to Moose Lake Station two. The walk to Moose Lake Station two from Moose Lake Station four was really long. It wasn't so bad though because everyone was used to walking and the snow was harder. Everyone was still warm and dry and no one was complaining. The groups finished their tests and it was time to go back to the bus. Everyone was glad to retreat to the bus because they were so tired. We had all been walking all day and were thankful to be going home. The trip was a fun and exciting experience and everyone made the most of the trip.

We would like to thank Diana and John Thomas, Ty Tollman, Arron Wilford, Mr Rego, and Mr. Wallace for their support and assitence during our field trip.
