East Fork of Clarks River, Calloway Co. KY
June 1996

On June 5, the 1996 Calloway County Eco-Adventurers met to practice and perform their chemical, biological and technological skills before they journey to work with scientists in Belize.

The Eco-Adventurers testing included: Mechelle Woodall, Jamie Sanders, Shane Burkeen, Jennifer Gay, Thomas Holcomb, Maranda Allbritten, Marcie Williams, Cloyd J. Bumgardner, Stephanie Wyatt, and Jean Watkins. These teen scientists and their advisors will be travelling to Belize in July of 1996.

The weather was overcast and partially cloudy. Earlier in the week there were numerous hailstorms and thunderstorms. These conditions contributed to the rise in the water level which made the the level above normal for this time of the year. Due to the heavier rain the dissolved oxygen test results decreased. The air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius. Many things had changed since our previous test date such as the vegetation on the gravel bank had really grown up. We still observed the car bumper in the water but the car motor and air conditioner weren't visible. Due to the time and weather we were unable to conduct test at our other sites.

The research team traveling to Belize designed a tee-shirt that portrayed the many aspects and activities of the trip. The Mayan ruins at the top represents the archeological dig we will be participating in with scientists in Belize. The jaguar symbolizes the world's first reserve that we will visit. The manatees, sea turtles, fish, represents our marine biology studies. The snorkeler represents the day we observe the coral and marine biomes at the world's second largest great barier reef. The dense vegetation represents our rainforest studies and our need to study biodiversity firsthand. For a closeup of the shirt, click the image above

Our test site was located downstream behind Wiggins furniture located approximately one mile north of Murray The air temperature was 25 degree Celsius.

Our group noticed a high level of nitrates due to the agricultural run-off. We had a great day! Looking forward to our next testing date!
