Stream Monitoring Expedition
Plan of Action:

• Abstract:

  Teams of teachers will travel to stream sites and conduct a series of water tests, visual observations and biological collections, recording their results for later comparison.

  ---

• Organization:

  • Monitoring Coordinator: Ken Cooke
  • Team Leaders: 1 for each expeditionary group with background in techniques and equipment use
  • Drivers: 2 for each group that can take riders to the stream site
  • Volunteer Monitors: participants willing to run the tests, record the observations and make the collections.
    

    Participants should dress for the weather.
    Wear submersible shoes, old sneakers or boots.
    Be prepared to get wet from the knees down!

• Equipment:

  • Kentucky Water Watch will provide each team with:

        1. Portable Water Testing Kit
        2. Waste Chemical Disposal bottle
        3. dip nets  (4)
        4. Collection Pans (2)
        5. Clip boards with report forms and survey sheet
        6. Field Guide
        7. Map to site
    

  • Optional equipment not provided but nice to have:

        1. Forceps
        2. Hand Lens
        3. Apple QuicTake Digital Camera (or similar device)
        4. Jar of Alcohol for preserving insects
        5. Conductivity Meter
    

• Program Plan:

  1. Expeditions to local creek
     After a 30 minute orientation, teams will divide up and head to the sites chosen, conduct their tests and return to HQ within 1&1/2hrs They should return their completed survey sheets to Vint for copying and redistribution during the Data Management phase of the retreat.
  2. Expedition to Thomas More College Ohio River Biology Field Station
     Participants not wanting to conduct stream walk are encouraged to visit the Ohio River Field Station. Water testing will also be conducted on this outing.
