Publishing Water Quality Results
On the World Wide Web

• Abstract:

  The Kentucky Water Watch Program encourages stream monitoring participants to share their stream monitoring data via the World Wide Web. These suggestions are recommended when publishing stream monitoring data.

• Types of information to publish
  • Text reports and narrative information
  • Data charts and graphs
  • Digital Photographs and illustrations.
  • Spreadsheet files.

• Participants must be familiar with the following applications:
  • How to find, open and save a file onto a hard drive or floppy drive
  • How to use a web browser and enter a URL (Web Address).
  • How to use MS Power point or MS Excel.
  NOTE:To publish a single web page requires the user to run Netscape, Powerpoint, a graphics converter and text editor during the same session. (and remember where all your output files are!) NOT FOR THE TIMID!!!!

What you need

• Workstations with the following applications:
  

          Netscape 1.3 or better
          MS Excel, Power point, and Word (or similar)
          *Graphics Converter
          *Simple Text Editor

• Formatted floppy disk or hard drive directory to store files.
• The following files;

      -results.ppt (your powerpoint presentation from testing results).
      -Any other images or graphics you want to publish.
      -Graphics files and template files provided by Water Watch.

• Background information we will provide:

     1. Hypertext Markup Language "Tag" list (Web page formatting codes)
     2. File naming conventions we will use.
     3. Web publishing do's and don'ts.
     4. Our publishing strategy for this project.

• Web Page Templates and step by step instructions for the following actions:

     1. Export graphics from MS Powerpoint (Or other graphics software).
     2. Convert Graphics to Web compatible format (GIF and JPEG).
     3. Insert graphics and text into a web page.
     4. Check your page.
     5. Add links to other pages.
     6. Transmit to the server (Demonstrated).
     7. Promote your pages to the world.

  Each workstation group (two people) will be responsible for taking the reports generated by the monitoring teams in earlier excercises and running them through this process. This is a real publishing project for a nationwide communications event being held over this week.
