The School To Work initiative at Calloway County High School will not end with
projects currently underway but will continue through the following venues. The theme of
environmental monitoring and water quality analysis will be carried to the great barrier reef of
Australia and the state of Alaska. In Australia students will have the opportunity to observe
the effects of pollution on the flora and fauna of the great barrier reef. The teen scientists will
study endangered species of marine life and help determine policies and procedures necessary
for habitat restoration. In Alaska, students will observe and catalog the different animal and
plant life indigenous to the area. They will also determine the effect environmental pollution
has on the flora and fauna of the area.
For teachers to meet the challenges ahead of developing scientifically literate students
they must be technologically literate, environmentally aware and possess an expansive vision
of education. To develop and implement projects such as these educators must have an
attitude of thinking globally and acting locally to prepare our next generation to lead us into the
21st century as world class students.
