One of the basic tenets of the Kentucky Education Reform Act is to provide quality
learning experiences where high expectations of all students are present. These authentic
experiences should be aligned with skills needed by businesses in the world of work and
reflect an integration of the academic and vocational areas of study. In this climate a sense of
urgency to learn is implicit. One way this climate was created in our project was to have
students shadow professionals who were engaged in their area of work. Mike Mills, Skip
Call and Lythia Metzmeier, biologists with the Kentucky Division of Water, trained students in
biological water monitoring techniques. In addition to relating scientific principles to real-
world situations, the students participating in the project developed a connection with
professionals who apply the same biological principles the students are studying.
